Former Edmonton Police Officer Convicted After Accident

A 30-year-old former Edmonton police officer was convicted Tuesday, April 14th, 2009, of dangerous driving causing bodily harm after driving through a red light and colliding with a pickup truck, injuring four people.

The fiery crash resulted in one young man suffering both second and third degree burns.

On May 11th, 2008, the officer sped through an intersection at more than 70 km/h, even though the light had been red for several seconds already. He testified the light was green and that he was travelling at a reasonable speed but the judge rejected that evidence, calling it unreliable and inconsistent with the testimony of several witnesses.

After speeding through the light, the officer T-boned a pickup truck with four teenagers inside. The truck flipped and landed on the driver’s side before erupting into flames.

The officer was originally charged with five counts of impaired driving causing bodily harm, one count of driving with a blood alcohol reading over the limit and five counts of dangerous driving causing bodily harm.

He was acquitted of the drunk driving charges after the judge rejected a breath sample collected following the crash by a rookie officer who breached his charter rights.

The officer has resigned from the force and will be sentenced July 30th.
